Automobile aficionados will almost always agree that cars are not all the same. On the one hand, some are low-cost, high mpg, transportation devices. On the other end of the spectrum, there are automobiles that are high-cost, collectible luxurious (or exotic) experiences. There is similarity between automobiles and the dichotomy of electronic and print media. Let me explain.
The internet is like a highway with zillions of cars traveling back and forth each day (or rather each second). Information speeds along at a great speed with the singular purpose of getting from point A to point B and specific points thereafter. Just like a commuter car, data travels the internet efficiently and at little cost. Let’s call the internet “information transportation”.
Magazines are more like classic, luxury and/or exotic automobiles. Each issue tends to be different. They are unusual (and sometimes expensive) to build and they are not necessarily meant to transport information. Magazines are meant to provide an experience that one can hold in one’s hands. Magazines have increasingly become identified with luxury rather than everyday items. Categorizing magazines as a luxury experience puts them in a different group from information transportation. This means a good bit more longevity due to special handling and a more enjoyable pace. Therefore, we should refer to magazines as an information experience just like classic, luxury and exotic cars.
Obviously, there is a difference between transportation and experience. Witness the comments of a duPont REGISTRY reader when he said that we have a “first class product”.
